Huawei Case Study: Huawei Helps Biznet Build an Intelligent Network

Background

Comprising more than 17,000 islands, Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelagic state, earning it the label “The Land of 1,000 Islands.” As an active economic participant in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Indonesia has been gradually expanding its telecom field since 2000. According to the United Nations, Indonesia has a population of 260 million, of which 93.4 million are Internet users. The Internet intricately connects the thousands of physically isolated islands to the digital world, which creates huge potential for digital economic growth and presents great opportunities and challenges to local Internet Service Providers (ISPs).  

Digital Transformation Facilitates Fast Metro Network Reconstruction

Biznet was established in 2000 and is now the largest privately owned Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Indonesia. It is committed to providing users with fast and reliable network services. Biznet offers direct connectivity to multiple tier-1 backbones and industry-leading Internet switches, delivering the fastest and shortest path to a destination. The ISP provides services such as broadband access [metro Ethernet and metro Fibre-To-The-Home (FTTH)], data centre hosting, and cloud services, to more than 100 cities across Indonesia: Biznet provides metro Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) leased lines for Small to Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and IP optical backbone bandwidth leasing services for large-sized enterprises. It enjoys 11 international POPs. Biznet has 25,000 km of optical fibres distributed throughout the islands of Java, Bali, Sumatra, and Batam, serving more than 100 major cities. Biznet fibres pass by 450,000 homes. Nearly 100,000 homes are connected to the Internet, accounting for roughly 25 per cent of the homes passed. In addition, Biznet provides content through Internet Protocol Television (IPTV). Biznet Data Center (BDC) owns and operates three data centres in Indonesia, located in Jakarta, West Java, and Bali. Biznet provides data centre leasing and hosting services, including cloud, physical host leasing, virtual private servers, and co-location services, that account for approximately 22 per cent of the Indonesian market.  

 

Challenges

Biznet’s business is applicable to enterprises in various fields, including large-scale talent recruitment websites in the Asia Pacific region, popular Japanese convenience store chains, large fast-food chains in the United States, low-cost carriers in Indonesia, local travel and ticket retail websites, and notable resorts. Biznet expects to become the leading enterprise in the Indonesian broadband access market. To support the current requirements and future plans of individual and enterprise customers, Biznet must first undergo its own digital transformation: As cloud computing, e-commerce, and HD video services continue to emerge in Indonesia, bandwidth requirements will increase exponentially. Technology, architecture, and bandwidth performance could not adapt to rapidly developing new services on the current Biznet live network. Live network devices faced warranty expiration. The current network architecture with single Broadband Remote Access Server (B-RAS) nodes could not meet the stringent user requirements for service reliability. Compounding the issue, the B-RAS nodes were not distributed evenly. In some cities, cross-backbone network authentication was required, but was restricted by limited bandwidth and frequent delays, directly affecting user experience. The current Operations and Maintenance (O&M) system could not continue to support operations after large-scale network construction. E2E services required manual configuration and adjustment, leading to time-consuming service provisioning. Solution

The Huawei WAN Solution Creates Immediate Impact and Future Plans Based on industry-leading NetEngine high-end routers and advanced Software-Defined Networking (SDN) architecture, the Huawei Intent-Driven Wide-Area Network (WAN) Solution provides a highly reliable network that supports fast fault location and smooth evolution. The new Biznet Fiber Network is the ideal example, consisting of a terabit core router network, metro Ethernet 10G/100G distribution networks, and gigabit Passive Optical Network (PON) access technology that can deliver services with a capacity of up to 2.5 Gbit/s: The Biznet Metro Network core node, NE40E + OSN902, ensures the network can meet the requirements of an ever-increasing number of services. The network has a capacity of up to 100 Gbit/s, and the metro Ethernet 10G/100G uses a ring configuration to provide auto protection when the fibre backbone is cut off. The Optical Network Terminal (ONT) device supports the latest Wi-Fi technology to provide faster data transmission. Based on innovative SDN architecture, industry-leading MPLS and bare IP network optimisation technologies addressing issues such as traffic imbalance, reduced bandwidth utilisation, and low network convergence efficiency due to repeated, fault-triggered topology recalculation. The IP + optical technology implements automatic service deployment, helping Biznet manage future network evolution and monetise new services. Metro Network IP + WDM and flattened architecture reduce latency and improve user experience. The Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) distributed B-RASs saves backbone bandwidth and are deployed on the MAN to prevent cross-region traffic access. A pair of optical fibres transmit at a rate of 20 Tbit/s — increasing the MAN fibre usage, reducing the number of hops, decreasing latency, and improving user experiences. U2000, a unified O&M and management system, implements E2E device management on the entire Biznet network. Visualised Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM) on the entire network implement fault visualisation and user experience.
